In fact, retired Knoxville News Sentinel Senior Writer, Fred Brown, describes Landry as East Tennessee s favorite uncle, the one with all the good stories that have become so familiar and popular. The Heartland Series premiered in 1984 to showcase the 50th anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Landry quickly emerged as host, narrator, and co-producer of the show. Over the twenty-five years, the Heartland team produced 1,900 short 3 - minute features and 150 half-hour specials. The show received four Emmy awards, two of which Landry won for direction. Landry grew up in Chattanooga, and earned a degree in literature from the University of Tennessee and a master s of fine arts degree from Trinity University and the Dallas Theater Center. He wrote and produced a one-man play about Albert Einstein called Einstein the Man and traveled 38 states and two provinces in Canada to give over 1,000 performances, which he continues to do. The book, Einstein the Man was published in 2000 and multiple copies given to every school within the state of Tennessee. From 1982-1984, he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority before beginning work on The Heartland Series, one of the longest-running productions in regional television history. Today, Bill and his wife Becky live in a log cabin built in 2007 in Blount County, Tennessee. Appropriately, it sits adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Matilda Nall Rogers, widow of Thomas A. Rogers, Joseph Rogers son, inherited the property from her husband. In 1848, the International Order of Oddfellows purchased the 66 acre tract, built a women s college and sold the balance of the property to finance the school. In 1850, Daniel C. Howery purchased the lot from the Oddfellows and built this Victorian clapboard house. Howery was owner of a brick kiln which furnished bricks for many early Rogersville houses. In 1917, Robert T. and Lyde Kyle Webb purchased the house. Mr Webb was stationmaster at the Rogersville Depot. The original lot extended from Church Street to Taylor Street. He and his wife enlarged the house and lived there until their deaths. Walker - Stewart House 316 East McKinney Avenue This property was originally part of the John A. McKinney estate. Upon Mr. McKinney s death in 1845, A.B. Rogan, a McKinney heir, purchased this lot and subsequently sold the lot to George A. Smith, a Rogersville attorney and editor of the Rogersville Review . Smith conveyed the lot to John T. Walker in 1912 and construction of the house began shortly there after. John T. Walker and Lida were married in 1900 and moved into the McKinney Avenue home in the early part of 1913 and raised a large family in the home. The original design of the John T. Walker home was Victorian with a covered porch across the front and along the east side of the house with a turret on the west end that extended well above the roof line. John T. Walker died in 1942 and Lida continued to reside in the house until 1958. The house sat unoccupied from 1958 to 1966 when Mike Walker, Sr., who was born in the house, and his wife, Margaret Cary Walker, renovated the original structure and moved into the home. During Mike and Margaret s ownership, the house underwent a total renovation; from the original Victorian design to the current Colonial design. The turret and the porch were removed. The two stained glass windows, woodworking, and some flooring are original to the home. The slab of Tennessee pink granite in the backyard is said to have been moved from the depot where ladies dismounting from their horses once used it. The current owners, Rick and Michelle Stewart, moved into the house in September 2008 and are blessed to reside in this historic home. The Stewarts are only the second owners outside of the Walker family to reside in this home. Rogers - Burdette House 504 East Broadway The original portion of the house dates from 1875 and is one of the oldest homes on Broadway. The hand-dug well in the yard was for years the source of the neighborhood water supply. Florence Armstrong, Janelle Burdette s great grandmother, purchased the house in 1899. Janelle s mother and father, Byron and Mildred Armstrong Rogers made the house their home in 1942. Byron, a prominent hardware merchant, was well known for his interest in horses. Janelle showed horses with her father from the time she was 9 years old. The stile block in the front yard is a reminder of the Rogers love of horses. Jill s mother was an ardent gardener; the home and grounds reflect her love of flowers and birds. Janelle and Dick began to restore the house well before their retirement. They moved into the house in 2007. In the home you will see mementos of family history, of their extensive travel and of their interest in nature. Janelle and Dick have used family antiques, mementos of their extensive travels and natural elements in the decor of the family home. Rogersville United Methodist Church 110 Colonial Road Experience the Christmas spirit with festive music, beautiful decor and the gracious hospitality of the Rogersville United Methodist Church. In 1818, the Reverend Mr. George White and other Methodist followers built a small frame church building on North Church Street. They started a Methodist cemetery on this property in 1822. This was the first Methodist Church in Rogersville, and Church Street was named for it. The old building stood until 1880 and was taken down after two other Methodist churches were built to the south of the original church. There was a division in the Methodist church during the Civil War. The northern contingent used the small church building on the northern portion of the lot and the southern contingent built a large frame church on the southern part of the lot in 1872. In 1882, trustees of the northern Methodist church purchased a lot on South Depot Street and built a small frame church building there. In 1937, the Methodist congregations in re-united. The Depot Street property was sold to the congregation of the First Christian Church. The large frame church building on North Church Street served the congregation until it was torn down in 1949. It was replaced in 1950 by the large sandstone structure, which serves the congregation in Rogersville today. Farris - Thomas House 204 Clifton Street This two-story English style brick house is located next door to the E. S. Clifton house and was built in 1946 by Alice C. and Frank Farris. Alice was the daughter of Matilda and E. S. Clifton, owners of the home next door. The house and garage were originally two separate buildings. The Farrises added the structure that connects the two buildings. They also enclosed the side porch, making a sunroom, which contains Shirley Thomas s snowman collection. Coy and Shirley Thomas purchased the house in 1997 and extensively renovated it. Rogan - Webb House 416 West Main Street Following their marriage, Robert Rogan and Graham Kyle Rogan built their new home in 1920 on West Main Street. The design was by Barber and McMurry, one of the most prestigious architectural firms in the southeast. This house was one of the first private residences the Knoxville firm designed. They also did the plans for the house of Murrell and Syble Testerman on East Main Street. Robert and Graham s daughter, Jean Porter Rogan, occupied the Rogan house until her death in 1997, when the Webbs purchased the property. The Rogan family operated a hardware business in Rogersville and used the best quality materials in their new home. The oak hardwood floors were refinished during the restoration. The only addition to the original plans is the sunroom over the side porch on the east side of the residence. At some point, the house was painted white. Features of the house and grounds include numerous boxwoods, some over 100 years old, leaded glass window in the dining room, fireplaces and mantles in every room, and herringbone pattern brick sidewalks around the house. Of particular interest is the mantle in the living room. It came from the Hale Springs Inn (where an identical mantle still remains). Oral tradition says that the mantle came from Ireland where the Rogans originally lived.
